Unearthing the Wartime Memories in Fujisawa and Nagaoka Cities

As the number of people with firsthand wartime memories declines, how can we uncover and pass on local memories of the war? Ryo Shimizuwho investigated the military-base history of Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture (including wartime underground bunkers on the SFC campus and training grounds along the Shonan coast) and authored *Walking the Military City: A Local Life History of Bases and Residents joins Naomi Mikami an SFC graduate who developed a keen awareness of the issues surrounding the inheritance of war memories while growing up in Fujisawa, and has since continuously confronted this question, creating the digital archive Trace of Soldiers to discuss that theme through their historical practices.
