ORF SESSION

Fun and Informative! Exploring the Worlds of Educational Manga and Practice-Inspiring Manga

Educational manga uses characters, stories, visual explanations, and other techniques to communicate knowledge about school subjects and specific topics in ways that are both engaging and easy to understand. What kinds of creative approaches are needed to balance educational value with the appeal of manga? Meanwhile, Takashi Iba has proposed a new genre called Practice-Inspiring Manga, which enables readers to gain ideas for improving their own practices. Together with members of the Iba Lab, he has been developing a variety of works in this emerging genre. In this session, manga artist Mitsuru Sugaya, whose work also includes educational manga, joins Takashi Iba to discuss how these two forms of manga are created and the possibilities they offer.
